Happy Birthday Madre!

This is my mom:
And today is her 45th birthday!!

Here are some things you should know about my mom:

Q Club: She was the second member of the Q club...even before Steven.
Madre: I went through/still am going through this phase where I didn't call her mom, only madre. Started in high school Spanish.
Musical: something a lot of people may not know is that she plays the piano. She often had music playing in our home growing up.
Festive: This was Steven's word and it's so true!! She decorates for every holiday...like even St. Patrick's day! And she has a 12 ft Christmas tree (the main one)
Kindred spirit: If you've ever watched Anne of Green Gables, you'll understand this.
Grandma: She has the grandma thing down! She skypes every week, asks for pictures basically daily and spoils the kid rotten!
Mom of 5 Friend to all: I think my mom could get along with most people. And this phrase could be her super hero motto.
Hip: She is so trendy! I have never been embarrassed to go out with her and I miss being able to go shopping with her regularly.
Teacher: My mom teaches English for a living. She also teaches Gospel Doctrine at church and each of the kids in our home.
Fashionable: She is looking for a dress for my sister's wedding and I hear comments like "that looks like an old lady would wear that!" I borrow my mom's clothes and especially jewelry when I go home to visit.
Friendly: I remember a lot of times growing up my mom was the one at church that would go say hi to new people and she always makes friends with the kids in nursery.
Unselfish: My mom is the least selfish person I know. She once drove 3 hours each way to pick up my letterman's jacket that I had forgotten at a leadership camp...by herself...in not great weather. She didn't complain about it either.
Patient: Did I mention she has five kids?
Ring leader: Our house is nothing short of a circus and she is the most efficient ring leader there ever was.
Thrifty: some of my greatest memories are from hitting up thrift stores together. She is so good at finding a good deal. Now it is so fun to call and talk about the good finds we get at thrift stores and the good deals we score!
Creative: My mom thinks of the coolest, most creative things sometimes. She is a magnet for creative things.
Baker: Steven wanted me to write baker extraordinaire but it wouldn't fit. She's not a big cook but she is a great baker!
Edumacated: Again, one of Steven's words. My mom has a Master's degree. I don't think I've ever heard her tell anyone she has one. Steven has known our family for over a decade and he had no idea she was so formally educated until we got married. She is educated but humble about it.
Reader: My mom instigated a love for reading in our home from as early as I can remember. She is the one I call when I find a great deal on books for Q because I know she understands me...oh and she buys him books a lot too!
Good Example: My biggest example in my life has always been my mom. I think she always will be.
Righteous: Even though she has been faced with a lot of trials and hardships, she has always been righteous. She took us to church alone for a while when we were young.
Smart Cookie: Like I said she has a Master's degree. But she's 'street smart' too. Like in the 5th grade, we went to a music store to get my clarinet books. We were talking to the owner about brands of instruments. She mentioned that we were looking at a Vito. The owner said, oh ya we see those in here a lot. Her response was, "Oh so does that mean they break easily and require a lot of upkeep?" I remember thinking WOW...never would have thought of that!
Caring: My mom is so caring. She checks in on all of us frequently and genuinely cares about what we are doing.
Crafty: My craft problem love comes from her. She can take almost anything and spruce it up. And after living with her for so long I have a hard time paying for a decoration or something similar if I know I can make it myself.
Kind: My mom goes through a lot on a daily basis. She is forgiving and always kind. She rarely complains.
Wife: She has been married to my dad for almost 24 years...and that's saying something :)
Generous: She flew to Minneapolis and then drove 4+ hours by herself in a place she had never been to come the day when Quintin was born. She basically abandoned her classes and the rest of my siblings to come help us out. She stayed for about five days. She woke up with me every time I fed the baby so she could help me get situated to feed him. I could hardly move and she was right there with me every single time. After I fed him, she would stay up and burp him and get him back to sleep so I could try and get some sleep. She even helped me get him to the doctor twice while she was here (to check on the jaundice). She went and ran errands, got groceries and even let us pick out a few sleepers and other things for Quintin. At the end of her stay, she had to drive back to Minneapolis by herself on like zero sleep. This was in no way a 'vacation' for her but she did it, never complaining. She put her life in AZ on hold to come to take care of me and Q. And this is just a more recent example of her generosity.
Beautiful: I have always thought my mom was one of the most beautiful people in the world...inside and out.
Adventurous: (Just realized I spelled that wrong on the card...crap) My mom is always up for an adventure. Like driving to SUU for me to go to a leadership weekend. Or driving to Hurricane, UT (and yes it is as big as it sounds ;)) for me to go to Prom and sleeping on the floor on an air mattress with me at my date's house (he slept somewhere else, FYI).
Listening ear: my mom is and always has been a listening ear. When I was in high school I thought she never listened to me...now I realize how much she remembers and I know I can call her anytime day or night to talk about anything and she will listen. She's also great at knowing when to offer advice or when to just listen.
Best Friend: Something I've come to learn recently especially after moving across the country is that my mom is truly one of my best friends. She laughs with me. She cries with me. The only thing is we don't really fight like some best friends do. At Christmas break a friend asked us if we had ever thought that maybe in heaven we got the choice of who would be the mom and who would be the daughter. I think we have been best friends forever.

We love you mom! We miss you more than you know!

Happy Birthday Caitlin!

Today is my sister-in-law (left), Caitlin's birthday!!

Here's her custom-made art work ;)

Healthy Eater: We are always hearing stories about all the delicious, healthy things her and Greg cook.
Mom-to-be: She's going to be having our little nephew anytime in the next month or so!
Teacher: Caitlin is a voice teacher and she also teaches piano!
Piano: Caitlin is a great piano player!
World traveler: Caitlin has been to some of the coolest places. This last summer she went to Spain and we were totally jealous!
Music: Caitlin is extremely musical! She is the talent in our family. This year for the family Christmas party she sang "Grown Up Christmas List". It was absolutely beautiful and I can't believe we haven't heard her sing before then!
Pretty eyes: You can see-look at that picture!
Dog lover: I have never heard Caitlin talk about a dog she didn't like.
Singer: Like I said, she's a voice teacher!
Aunt: She is Quintin's only "Dorn" aunt!
Violin: She also plays the violin-see I told you she was musical!
Opera: Opera performance is her major at BYU. She was in an opera called Trial By Jury last summer. Our in-laws said it was great!
Fashionable: She even makes maternity clothes look good. And if you've ever been pregnant, you know that's no easy feat!
Wife: She's Greg's wife!
BYU Class of 2011: Caitlin will soon be getting her BA from BYU!!
Thankful: One of the things I have always been impressed with about Caitlin is her almost immediate response in sending Thank-You cards. Seriously I think I had a thank-you card for her baby shower waiting for me when I got back after Christmas break. And, I don't know if it's just ours or if it's everyone's but she always makes them sound so sincere. I know she takes time to write such nice notes!

Happy birthday, Caitlin! We hope it's your best year yet!

Repeat after me:

I love being a mom

I love being a mom

I love being a mom
(These don't even do it justice-it was up to his shoulder blades!)

I love being a mom

By the way...this happened at 12:25 AM.

4 Months Old!

How in the heck this happens, I don't know but my baby KEEPS ON GROWING!!
Quintin is now 4 months old.

At 4 months he:
-Weighs 16 lbs. 3 oz. (75%)
-is 25 1/4 inches long (75%)
-has a head in the 90th percentile.
-is a MAJOR couch potato! He loves to watch the TV when we are watching a movie.
Also, he just likes relaxing on the couch.

-only sleeps well if it is dark
-smiles and laughs a lot

-is TOTALLY ticklish.
-loves givin mama kisses EVEN if he's not hungry.

-is doing much better at tummy time.

-will roll onto his side but is too lazy to go all the way over. His Dr. said that his head is so big it may take him awhile to roll over. I don't know what that has to do with rolling over, I think the Dr. was just trying to make me feel better. I'm fully convinced he COULD roll over if HE wanted to.

-likes to suck on his hands or his dad's hands or his mom's hands or anyone else's for that matter.

-has considered converting to a thumb sucker but I think has grown out of that phase.

-spits up A LOT sometimes...and I mean A LOT!

-has been on ONE outside walk (not counting AZ)

- likes rice cereal better if he licks it off his bib.

-has enough hair for a faux hawk.

We love him more and more every single day!

Happy Birthday Brad!

Well, if you didn't read one of my last posts, my sister Talia is engaged to this guy:

Since we've fully adopted him as part of the family, we decided to do a little tribute to "Uncle B" on our blog.

Physics- His major at BYU-I
Ra Ra Rasputine- A song from Just Dance 2 that reminds us of him.
Uncle-Quintin's Uncle B
Smart-Did I mention his major is physics?!
Kind- He is seriously one of the nicest guys.
Humble- He doesn't go out of his way to have attention. I don't see it as shy but more as humble. He also is extremely smart but doesn't rub it in your face-a quality many intelligent people lack!
Math- His minor at BYU-I
Returned Missionary- Brad served a two year mission for our church in
Russia- (see above) Oh and the Russian word on there is "friend"
Polite- He came to visit our family at Christmas time and he was so polite. Our family is pretty loud and often ill-mannered, but Brad is polite!
Lucky guy- well he is marrying my sister and getting me for a SIL
Taco- Fond memories of taco-ing him and Talia on the lovesac.
Rubik's Cube- Brad is one of the only people I know who can solve a Rubik's cube in under 2 minutes without taking off the stickers.
Grateful- Brad is always saying thank you for the simplest of things.
Steadfast- Brad is strong in the Gospel. I know he will be a steadfast example for my little nieces and nephews.
Cute smile- Seriously, he has such a cute, sweet smile.

All in all, we are excited for Brad to join our crazy eternal family!

Valentine's Day!

Well I hope you already saw our Valentine's card! Quintin picked up quite a few ladies as his valentines with the card (grandmas and aunts mostly)!

For Valentine's day, Steven came home with chocolate chip muffins and served them to me in bed. He also bought pink roses. We went and visited our nurse friends and came home to hang out with dad again. The boys cooked dinner while I did homework. Then, we got all dressed up and went to an orchestra concert at UND. I totally slipped on some ice and ate it when we were walking in(which the bruise on my leg is still fading away). We had to take Quintin because it didn't start until 8 (on a school night) and we figured all our friends were spending time with their valentines. He of course woke up and we spent some of the time walking around the top of the auditorium with him. After the concert, we went to Denny's and had dessert...which Quintin decided he was entitled to sample as well. Then, we came home, got baby in bed and exchanged our cards for each other.

All in all, the best Valentine's day I've ever had with two cute valentines.

Update: We also got a package from my mom. Quintin loves his gorilla that says "MUAH! I love you!" It already has a bald spot.

Babysitters.

Up until about two weeks ago, we always took Quintin with us on date night (minus the time we were in AZ and he stayed with grandma and grandpa).
Well, we learned the hard way that he is too big for this now.
Feb. 11
First, we went to see a movie (Gnomeo & Juliet-funny!). He was asleep when we got there. Normally, he would stay asleep. Well he decided to wake up SCREAMING. After walking around outside the theater with him for a bit, we went back inside and I stood in the aisle thing and watched half the movie. Then, Steven spilled most of our candy all over the floor too. The rest of the movie, Quintin had this uncanny ability to coo at the screen every time it was supposed to be quiet.

After, we decided to go to dinner. We ordered pizza at the restaurant knowing that it required at least 20 minutes to cook. Well Quintin (who hadn't had a nap all day) decided to let everyone in the restaurant know he was there. This led both Steven & I to take turns going out in the hall and walking around with him. At one point, I was out and the waiter came and told Steven there was a new cook on duty and our pizza had been burned-another 20 mins. (but on a positive note-we did get it for free) After what seemed like a year, Steven finally got Q asleep and the pizza was ready. I cut up Steven's pizza into tiny pieces so he could eat while holding Q. Of course Q woke up right as I was finishing and we had ordered dessert.

We fought him off as long as possible but when we finally left, he screamed the whole way home until I could feed him and knock him out for a good nap.
Morale of the story? Baby Quintin is too big and nosy to go on date night with mom and dad.

All in all, one of those nights we knew for sure that we wouldn't have handled the experience well if we hadn't been married.

Here's a picture from the restaurant. Faces describe everything haha.

Note: It's not that I won't leave Quintin with a babysitter...it's that I can't. He 'forgot' how to drink out of a bottle when we got back from Christmas break. I don't feel comfortable leaving him with someone when I know he'll just scream a good majority of the time. So, we're looking forward to having a good schedule with cereal and then eventually baby food so we can leave him. Until then, it's grandma and grandpa or loud date nights!

February 1st- Rice Cereal

Well a few weeks ago, Quintin started a MAJOR growth spurt. I mean eating every hour or two. I was having a hard time keeping up with him so we decided it was time to introduce rice cereal. Well, he's not a big fan as it has ZERO flavor (seriously-have you ever tried it?!). But, it sustained him through the growth spurt. When we first started he only had it every couple of days. Now, I try to give it to him every other day at least! Here's some pictures!
Note: It wasn't St. patrick's day (obviously)...we only had one clean bib.

Random Thoughts on a Monday...wait Tuesday Morning.

Oh my heck being a mom is hard, wonderful, exhausting and beautiful all at the same time.

If I get asked one more time what I'm going to use my degrees for I'm going to scream.

I have 4 weeks left of school and absolutely no intention of going to any more. This is a new feeling for me.

We are thinking Disneyland after Steven graduates next year.

I'm excited for my sister's wedding, but not the dress I have to wear (good thing she never reads this blog).

I love family pictures. If it was up to me, we would get them taken every year at minimum. Since Quintin has been born we have had family pictures taken 5 times.

I am totally watching the bachelor this season. It is beyond ridiculous. The guy wore mandals on one of the dates tonight and the girl still cried when she didn't get the rose...I don't think she's missing much. I want Emily to win.

I also love shows on TV related to cake or cupcakes (Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Ultimate Cake off, Cupcake Wars, etc)

I watched way too much TV tonight.

Every day I try to clear off my desk and every day there is a new mound of papers and books and pictures to put away.

I am planning the best bachelorette party for my sister. It involves making 6 pairs of pajama pants. I picked out cute fabric. Good thing I still have 2 months.

Steven and I are very much trying to sort through things and organize the clutter and chaos of our house.

I miss sunshine like you wouldn't believe. If I hear anyone else complaining about temperatures of 40 degrees or less I'm going to roll my eyes and hope they get stuck in my head.

My best friend's birthday was on Saturday. I forgot to call her. I am still so embarrassed about it that I haven't called. I always think it's the 25th, not the 5th. DANG IT!

My other best friend and I haven't spoken since Christmas time. She has a bunch of pictures from Q's blessing that I really would like to have.

I am the worst best friend ever.

Quintin is ticklish. REALLY ticklish...but so far only for me. Steven can't do it. And Quintin's laugh could cure cancer if I could figure out how to bottle it up, I'm pretty sure.

Michael Buble still melts my heart. So does Bing Crosby.

My oh my this is possibly the most random blog post I have ever written. I need to go to bed.
