5 Things People Don't Tell You About Being Pregnant-First Trimester

So, I realize that I am fairly new at this pregnancy thing, but I have already learned a few things that I feel other people who are not pregnant yet may benefit from hearing. So here are five things no one told me about being pregnant-first trimester version.

1. Pregnancy actually consists of 40 weeks...which is more like 10 months. People just say 9 months because you may don't really get pregnant until 2 weeks have passed and after 38 weeks your baby is considered full term AND I think they say that so you can count in TRImesters...but still. You are counting down 40 weeks, not 36- just FYI. In some Asian countries, they consider the gestational age 10 months (Thank you Pregnancy for Dummies for clarifying that fact)

2. You will have gas and it will be embarrassing...even if it is just around your husband. Just ask Steven. I thought I had a few months for that part to happen, but it started right away...I can't wait to go to my in-laws in a few weeks.

3. Being sick when you are pregnant is 1000 times more miserable. I just found that one out yesterday. Your whole body aches and your head feels like it might explode but you are still craving pickles (or in my case, cheese).

4. At first, your baby bump just looks like you have eaten too many Oreos (which in my case might be true). Right now my bump is more like a chub...and it's inconveniently placed so my pants are starting to get uncomfortable. Bring on the bump- I want people to see it!

5. Your husband may or may not experience symptoms of pregnancy with you. Steven considers himself man pregnant. He has cravings and is still trying to out eat me at every meal. Maybe this is just a Steven thing, but I think it might be a husband thing. So ladies, give your husband some extra attention. Remind him you are eating for 2 and he doesn't need to out eat you. Seriously, Steven has gained more weight than me so far...and if he keeps going, he will have a bigger bump than me. *As I type this he is currently frosting cinnamon rolls, see my point?*

And- the one thing I knew before pregnancy but I'll share any way: Pregnancy is an excuse to be crazy. You can be hungry, thirsty, tired, irritated, all at the same time. All you have to say is "I'm Pregnant" and people instantly understand. Well it took Steven awhile to catch on, but he's got it now and things are going much smoother. He's starting to understand the importance of fulfilling cravings too. i.e. If you don't get me Oreos tonight on your way home, I may wake up at 2 am and want them and it will be harder for you to find them in the middle of the night.

We are excited and enjoying every minute.

Valentines Day- Part 3

For my gift to Steven, we kind of planned it together. I got called to substitute teach the morning of the 15th so my plans were a little less prepared than I would have liked. After getting home, I drove Steven to the airport and got everything ready while he did a lesson. I planned us a special dinner of this:
Main Dish: Popcorn Chicken & Tater Tots
Close-up of that salad: it had mini pepperonis in it.
Appetizers: Baby Pickles & Carrots w/ Ranch

Baby Shrimp and Cocktail sauceDessert: Mini Chocolate Covered Pretzels and Mini M&MsThe Final Product:
After eating for awhile, I had some gifts for Steven. Here is Steven's gifts. If you don't get it, read here.

And, if you still don't get it...this should make it pretty easy to understand.
*Sorry this is a little blurry*

PS This is from right after Steven figured out the 'tiny' dinner and saw the test. I think it's a pretty priceless shot. And this is when he opened his other present...also a priceless face.He couldn't believe that we will have a baby to fit in that in a few short months!

Bismarck Temple Trip

A few weeks ago, Ya ya I'm behind again...sue me, it was Stake Temple Day. We have always participated in this whenever we could, but it has never been the same as it was this time.

First, it means a lot more when you have to drive 4 hours each way to get to the temple. We wouldn't change this trip for anything. We have always been spoiled living less than an hour away from a temple. We have also lived by a temple that operates almost every hour (sometimes on the half hour too) every day of the week except Sunday & Monday. It was surprising to hear that the Bismarck temple only operates on Thursday night at 5 & 7, Friday night at 6 & 8 and Saturday at 9, 11, & 1. All in all, it takes a lot more effort and planning to attend the temple here. Several times in AZ, Steven and I would randomly decide to have date night at the temple, or we could take the youth during the day. It was close enough to go on a weekday even! We definitely took advantage of it there.
We left Friday afternoon with our new, awesome friends the Hanson's. We rented a car...I don't remember what it was, but it was nice and saved so much money on gas (The Hansons also drive a gas-guzzling jeep). The 4 hr trip there FLEW by because of the great conversation, yummy road trip snacks, and Steven's persistence of listening to Michael Jackson.
We got there and checked in our hotel, visited the Smiths for a bit (they had gone up earlier in the day), jumped on our bed for a minute, and then we went to the pool. After the pool when we were all starving, we circled the city for some food. Never in my life have I been so excited to see a 10 story building before! Bismarck was a huge city compared to Grand Forks!
We were all indecisive and finally decided on Applebee's. BUT as soon as we turned in to Applebee's, we saw the sign for Olive Garden and quickly, unanimously changed our mind! There are two Applebee's here in GF and there is no Olive Garden. Also, Steven and I have never been to an actual Olive Garden restaurant. Our wedding luncheon came from Olive Garden, but that was a limited Olive Garden experience. The food was SO good! How did we never go there before? Poor little Hannah (the Hanson's daughter) got wiped out and fell asleep on the floor while we finished eating.
Oh and some guy proposed to his girlfriend at the table right behind us...it was distracting, a little awkward, and I hope Olive Garden had some more romantic meaning or memory to them than just being random...
After dinner, we went back to the hotel and watched Food Network a little before we crashed. The next morning we slept in and took advantage of the awesome continental breakfast (nice hotel= nice breakfast). Then, we checked out and headed to the temple. The temple was a small temple, but just as beautiful as the rest. I have never been in a temple that small before, but it felt how it should and I was happy to be there!
*PS I wear tights now-isn't that so not me? But I'm rather attached to my legs, so they are not optional.

When our session was over, we went and found the Smith's kids and Hannah at the church and stayed there talking for awhile. When we could avoid it no longer, we headed home (after stopping for lunch first). We got home when it was still daylight and had a blast. Thank you for Gary & Amy for planning this and letting us come along for the ride! The next stake temple trip is in April, and we can't wait!

Valentine's Day-Part 2

Here is us on Valentine's Day:Here are the flowers Steven brought me:
*FYI: Roses are our anniversary flower...daisies and lilies are for everything else!

Here is reason #7,548,909,857 Steven is the perfect man for me. This is what he bought me for Valentine's Day:
Who needs jewelry when you can have Michael? If you haven't seen this movie, go watch it! It will reassure you how great of a person MJ really was. It's the only movie Steven and I have ever watched all of the special features...more than once...

Valentine's Day

Well, as some of you may know, we are not huge fans of Valentine's day...we love each other every day so why make a day to pressure each other to get the perfect gifts? However, we think the idea of taking time out to show the love is a good idea. Our first year of marriage, we totally ignored the holiday. Last year, we had our fancy schmancy party and invited some other couples over. This year, we decided to invite the Smith family to our teeny tiny apartment and have dinner. We were very glad they came! The kids had been sick most of the week, but they were better to come for dinner! For desert, we made cake...white cake that I went a little food-coloring-happy making pink.

Steven does not like to use the PAM spray, and he thought I put too much on (he always thinks that) so he wiped it off...and the cake did not come out of the pan...So I had to decorate them in the pan and my 2 layer masterpiece turned into 2, 1 layer attempts.

For dinner, we had 2 kinds of pasta, pink punch, salad, and rolls. We decorated with Valentine place cards and rose petals.

For desert, we had the BRIGHT pink cakes. But, the kiddos found the tootsie rolls and had those also. The two oldest kids both stocked up on similar colored tootsie rolls. One took all the blue at first and then older brother decided he wanted all the green. Don't worry, we did not let them eat all of them.Seriously...have you ever seen cake that pink before that wasn't strawberry flavored?!

We played games for awhile and then they headed home! We are glad they came and happy that we have made good friends with them!
